Early Life and Education

Anna Wintour was born on November 3, 1949, in Hampstead, London, into a family deeply connected to the media world. Her father, Charles Wintour, was the editor of the London Evening Standard.

Anna attended North London Collegiate School but left before graduating. Her fascination with fashion began early, inspired by the vibrant London scene of the 1960s and American magazines sent by her grandmother.

Career

Wintour’s journey in fashion journalism began as a fashion assistant at Harper’s & Queen in London. She later moved to New York, where she worked at New York magazine and House & Garden.

She became editor of British Vogue in 1985, and in 1988, she took over as editor-in-chief of American Vogue.

Wintour revitalized the magazine, mixing high fashion with celebrity culture and expanding its influence globally. She was instrumental in launching Teen Vogue and elevating the Met Gala to a premier international fundraising event.

After 37 years, Wintour stepped down as Vogue’s editor-in-chief in June 2025 but continues to shape the industry as Condé Nast’s Global Chief Content Officer and Global Editorial Director of Vogue.

Personal Life

Anna Wintour married Dr. David Shaffer, a child psychiatrist, in 1984. They had two children, Charles “Charlie” Shaffer and Katherine “Bee” Shaffer, before divorcing in 1999.

She later had a long-term relationship with telecom executive Shelby Bryan, which ended around 2020.

Wintour is currently single. Her daughter Bee is married to Italian filmmaker Francesco Carrozzini.

She serves as an Elective Trustee of the museum and co-founded the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund to support up-and-coming American designers.

She has also helped raise more than $20 million for AIDS research and is a founding committee member of the New York-Presbyterian Youth Anxiety Center.

Her charitable efforts have been recognized with numerous honors, including Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (2017), the French Légion d’Honneur (2011), the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2025), and the Companion of Honor from King Charles III (2025).
