Jack Lowden was born on 2 June 1990 in Chelmsford, Essex, but was raised in the Scottish village of Oxton.
He is the son of Gordon and Jacquie Lowden and has a younger brother, Calum, who is a professional ballet dancer. Initially involved in dance classes, Jack discovered his passion for acting at a young age. He joined the Scottish Youth Theatre in Edinburgh at age 10 and participated in various local productions.
He attended Earlston High School and took summer courses at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London. In 2011, he graduated with a BA in Acting from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
