Early Life and Education

Badenoch spent her formative years in Nigeria and the United States, where her mother worked as a lecturer. At 16, she returned to the UK due to political unrest in Nigeria. She completed her A Levels at Phoenix College and later earned a Master of Engineering in Computer Systems from the University of Sussex in 2003. Additionally, she obtained a law degree from Birkbeck College, University of London, in 2009.

Badenoch’s professional journey began in the IT sector as a software engineer at Logica from 2003 to 2006. She then moved into finance, serving as an associate director at Coutts from 2006 to 2013 and later as the digital director for The Spectator from 2015 to 2016.

Her political career commenced when she became a member of the London Assembly in 2015 after Victoria Borwick was elected as an MP. In 2017, Badenoch was elected as the MP for Saffron Walden, now known as North West Essex.Throughout her parliamentary career, Badenoch has held several key positions:

  • Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children and Families (2019-2020)
  • Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Equalities (2020-2021)
  • Minister of State for Equalities and Local Government (2021-2022)
  • Secretary of State for International Trade and Minister for Women & Equalities (2022-2024)
  • Secretary of State for Business and Trade (2023-2024)

In November 2024, she became the Leader of the Conservative Party and Leader of the Opposition.
