Early Life and Education
Born and raised in London and East Sussex, England, Cox is the youngest of five children of Patricia (née Harley) and Andrew Frederick Seaforth Cox, a publisher.
Raised in a Catholic household, he attended Ashdown House School and Sherborne School, both prestigious boarding schools.
Initially uncertain about pursuing acting, he developed a serious interest during his final school years.
After completing his secondary education in 2001, he trained professionally at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
Career
Cox’s breakthrough came with his lead role as Tristan Thorn in Stardust (2007). He made his West End theatre debut in 2008, starring in Harold Pinter’s plays The Lover and The Collection.
On television, he portrayed Owen Sleater in Boardwalk Empire (2011–2012) and played Jonathan Hellyer Jones in The Theory of Everything (2014).
His portrayal of Matt Murdock/Daredevil on Netflix brought him international acclaim, including a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
More recently, he starred in the Irish crime drama Kin (2021–2023) and the Netflix spy thriller Treason (2022).

In September 2018, Cox married television producer Samantha Thomas. The couple has two children and resides in Connecticut.
He holds dual citizenship in the UK and the US, having become a naturalized American citizen in January 2025. Cox has lived in major cities including New York, Los Angeles, and London.
A passionate football fan, he supports Arsenal F.C.
